Deputy Chief
Minister DK Shivakumar remarked on Thursday that the city’s infrastructural
issues cannot be resolved overnight, stating, "even gods cannot improve
the city’s infrastructure within three days." He underscored the
importance of long-term planning and consistent implementation.
At the
inauguration of the three-day Namma Raste 2025 Workshop & Exhibition, along
with the launch of the Traffic Laboratory at BBMP headquarters, Shivakumar
advocated for prioritising safety, quality, and uniformity in road development.
"We must plan today to ensure Bengaluru remains better in the future. If
we fail, we are betraying the city," he said.
The event runs
until 22 February and gathers government departments to discuss solutions for
improving roads, footpaths, and alleviating traffic congestion. As Bengaluru’s
metro, suburban rail, and bus networks expand, discussions centre on
integrated, multi-modal transport, promoting walkability, and enhancing
last-mile connectivity. Shivakumar proposed standard designs for bus shelters
and street poles to reduce visual clutter while incorporating local cultural
artwork in metro structures.
A significant
highlight was the release of Namma Raste Kaipidi, an illustrated handbook for
designing and maintaining roads within BBMP limits. Shivakumar instructed BBMP
to remove overhead cables and shift them underground, while acknowledging
ongoing challenges with tunnel road construction and the white-topping of
approximately 1,700 km of roads designed to last 30 years.
Earlier, he
accused the BJP and JD(S) of a political conspiracy regarding the Mysuru Urban
Development Authority (MUDA) issue, denying any involvement from Chief Minister
Siddaramaiah.
